SurfShark Starter vs Proton Plus
Posted by MoxJet
Hello! I am currently running my sparkbox with SurfShark starter as recommended by Tom, but see that Proton Plus is the same price with a coupon ($2.49 for 24 months) minus the additional three free months that surfshark gives you. Given how close the price is, is it worth it to get a refund on surfshark and move to proton? The port forwarding option with proton seems nice. Looking for general thoughts! I will exclusively be using this for my sparkbox, if that changes any thoughts.

Heads up on the port forwarding — Proton's and SparkBox have a known conflict right now. There's a firewall rule in SparkBox's config that blocks Proton's port-forward traffic, and it comes back every time you run sparkbox update, so you'd be removing it manually after each update. Surfshark works with SparkBox out of the box — no post-update edits — and you're already getting 3 extra free months over the Proton deal. I'd stick with what you have. (And if you ever want to pass the deal along to someone — Surfshark 87% off + 4 months free: https://get.surfshark.net/affc?offerid=1126&affid=9447&affsub=hr52es)

Mullvad is 5$ per month pre paid monthly. So its one of the cheapest if you want a monthly plan, and don't want to pay for 1 year all at once.

Good shout on the monthly pricing — Mullvad is a solid VPN in general. Worth knowing though: Mullvad dropped port forwarding support a couple of years back, so for SparkBox it won't be able to help with seeding downloads or VPN-tunneled remote access. If price is the priority, Surfshark on a long plan works out even cheaper and plays nicely with SparkBox out of the box (87% off + 4 months free: https://get.surfshark.net/affc?offerid=1126&affid=9447&affsub=hr52es).
