Hey thurr! Starting self hosting after a good minute of pussyfooted tech-junkieism. I've watched you grow on YT for what I'm surprised to find has been a few years (I could've sworn it had been ~10ish months max, but apparently the tech part of my brain resides in a time capsule π). The evolution of the Tier List and now the Spark Box knocked the dust off my tuchus and get the ball rolling already!πͺ So, here I am, booting up the wee minipc with Windows 11 Pro, firing up Brave, dling SparkBox, installing, and getting caught up like Usher each and every time: "Setup hit a problem during the "enable Linux" step." I can see the app has been installed, but it never gets passed this error in setup. Is there any hope for me? Like Usher, "I don't know what it is, it seems [it's] got me twisted!"πPlease help!

Hey! You're basically there β SparkBox installed fine, this error is just about turning on the small Linux machine inside Windows (a built-in Windows feature). On a fresh mini PC the usual culprit is virtualization being switched off in the BIOS. Restart the PC, press Del or F2 while it boots to enter the BIOS, and enable Virtualization β on AMD it's usually called SVM, on Intel it's VT-x. Save, boot back into Windows, and run SparkBox Setup again β it remembers where it stopped and continues from there. If that's already on, just say and I'll give you the next check.

Thanks for the response! Had to take a back way into BIOS but virtualization was already enabled. Setup still ends at "enable Linux" step. πWhat now?

Good, that rules out the BIOS. The next thing to grab is the exact reason, and setup already wrote it down for you: open C:\ProgramData\SparkBox\installer.log and look at the last few lines - it'll show something like "Could not enable WSL (exit ...)". Even faster: right-click Start, pick "Terminal (Admin)", and run exactly this - it's the same step SparkBox is doing: wsl --install --no-distribution. That prints the real error on screen. Paste whatever it says back here and I'll get you the fix. Re-running Setup is safe too - it just continues where it left off.

Already on standby! π Log reads: [ERROR] Could not enable WSL (exit 1). See C:\ProgramData\SparkBox\installer.log. Terminal Admin reads: Installing: Windows Subsystem for Linux The service cannot be started, either because it is disabled or because it has no enabled devices associated with it π¬ No idea what comes next.

That error is Windows saying the helper service WSL runs on is switched off β totally fixable, and not something you did wrong. In the same admin Terminal, switch on the two Windows features WSL needs by running these one at a time, then restart the PC: dism.exe /online /enable-feature /featurename:Microsoft-Windows-Subsystem-Linux /all /norestart dism.exe /online /enable-feature /featurename:VirtualMachinePlatform /all /norestart After the restart, run SparkBox Setup again β it resumes right where it stopped. If it still throws the same message, paste back and I'll walk you through starting the WSL service directly.

Thanks for that! After restarting I ran the setup again. Ran into the same hitch! πWent back into the logs to find that the WSL was too old. Headed to 'le innanet' search and came upon a github link. Found the right one on the 3rd attempt. π
Was able to get through setup! HOORAY! π«‘ However, I am now completely stuck. Isn't there supposed to be some dashboard I can see on the desktop? I pasted the link from the logs into Brave and can see the dashboard. But I honestly am just confused and overwhelmed. π«£ Thanks for helping me install tho!

Congrats β you're through the hard part! To answer your question directly: there's no separate desktop app. SparkBox is a website, so the page you already have open in Brave is the dashboard β you're in exactly the right place. Bookmark it so it's always one click away. If you ever lose the link, open the Ubuntu terminal and run sparkbox urls β it prints the dashboard address plus every app. And don't worry about feeling overwhelmed: you don't have to set everything up today. Follow the on-screen wizard, pick your admin password, then explore one tile at a time. You're past the tricky bit already.
