I Built a Streaming App Because… AI Wasn’t Enough There are already too many streaming apps. That’s kind of the point. Watching something used to be simple pick a film, press play. Now it’s a loop of searching, switching apps, checking availability, and hoping the thing you found actually works. Even with better recommendations, the experience hasn’t really improved. It’s just become more fragmented. That’s what led me to build StreamDek. --- It Wasn’t Really About Discovery A lot of the conversation around streaming focuses on discovery how to find something to watch. AI has made that part better. Recommendations are smarter, more personalised. But that’s not where things fall apart. The friction starts after you decide what you want to watch. You still have to: Find where it’s available Try a source Deal with buffering or broken links Start the process again if it fails The actual act of watching something is still unreliable. --- The Idea Was Just to Remove Steps StreamDek started as a way to reduce how many steps sit between “I want to watch this” and actually watching it. Not in a grand, “reinvent streaming” way just practically. Instead of jumping between services, the idea was to pull everything into one place, resolve streams behind the scenes, and pick something that works without needing constant input. Press play, and it should just… play. --- Aggregation Instead of Reinvention Most platforms focus on owning content or locking you into their ecosystem. This takes a different approach aggregation. It connects to different sources, pulls available streams, and then tries to figure out the best option. If something doesn’t work, it moves on to the next without forcing you to start over. There’s no real novelty in the idea itself it’s more about making the experience less annoying. --- Where AI Fits (and Where It Doesn’t) AI is useful for recommendations. It’s good at figuring out what you might want to watch next. But it doesn’t fix the underlying experience of actually watching something. You can have the perfect recommendation and still end up staring at a buffering screen. So while AI can help with discovery and personalisation, it’s not really solving the part that feels broken. --- Built Around Real Usage This wasn’t designed from a feature list it came from using streaming apps and getting frustrated with the same issues over and over. So the focus stayed pretty narrow: Start playback quickly Avoid dead or low-quality streams Keep track of progress Work the same across devices Everything else is secondary to that. --- The Hard Part Isn’t What It Looks Like The tricky part isn’t the interface or even finding sources it’s making everything feel fast and reliable. There’s a lot happening behind the scenes: Resolving streams Handling multiple providers Switching when something fails Keeping things responsive Most of that work isn’t visible, which is kind of the point. --- Keeping It Simple on the Surface Ideally, none of the complexity is noticeable. It should feel like: Open → Click → Watch If you have to think about what’s happening under the hood, something’s gone wrong. --- Why Bother Building It This wasn’t about proving a point or building a product around AI. It was just trying to fix something that feels unnecessarily complicated. Streaming works, technically. But the experience around it is still clunky. Too many steps. Too many points of failure. This is just an attempt to make it a bit smoother. --- Still a Work in Progress There’s still a lot to figure out performance, reliability, edge cases. But the direction is fairly simple: reduce friction as much as possible. Not by adding more features, but by making the existing experience less frustrating. --- AI might help in parts of it. But it’s not really the reason this exists.
