SparkBox is officially built for UGREEN NAS, so on a Synology it warns you and then tries to keep going; it sometimes works, but Synology's operating system is fairly locked down, so it's hit-or-miss and not something I can fully support running directly on it. The reliable way folks pair it with a Synology: run SparkBox on a normal Linux machine — a cheap always-on mini-PC is ideal, or a Linux VM on the Synology if your model has Virtual Machine Manager — and keep your media on the Synology. SparkBox just reaches the files over your network. Tell me your Synology model and whether you'd rather run it on the Synology or a separate box, and I'll point you at the cleanest route.

First, DSM (Synology's OS) is locked down and doesn't give SparkBox the standard Linux setup its one-command installer needs — and the DS218+ can't really run a Linux VM either (it ships with 2GB RAM, maxes at 6GB). Second, that RAM is well under the 8GB+ the media apps want, so even forced on it'd struggle. Where the DS218+ shines is storage.
