Configuring Transcoding on Jellyfin
Posted by noliver2761
<- Jellyfin | Guide - Hello Im a little confused on what boxes to click here for transcoding setup. Do you mind clarifying? Specifically Guide says - Enable: H.264, HEVC, VP9, AV1 decode; H.264, HEVC encode However, it seems that on Jellyfin its split between encode and decode and as some values exist on both lists etc.

Enable hardware encoding stays CHECKED — that's the master toggle; without it the per-codec encode checkboxes do nothing. Guide assumes it's on. VC1: leave unchecked unless you actually have VC1 media (old Windows-format files; rare). New thread for the unrelated question is better — easier for future people searching for the same issue. And don't apologize. The kind of questions you're asking are exactly what makes the guides better. Yell whenever.

The split's correct — Jellyfin shows them as two lists because they're different operations. Decode (top section): the GPU pulls these codecs off disk and converts them to raw video. Check H.264, HEVC, VP9, AV1. Encode (lower section): the GPU compresses raw video INTO this codec to send to your client. Check H.264 and HEVC. It's normal for the same codec to appear in both — e.g. H.264 in/out means the GPU decodes the source AND re-encodes the stream as H.264. Other settings on that page (Hardware acceleration mode, Low-power encoder, etc.) leave at defaults for now.

Thank you! And I suppose I should uncheck the things not listed? such as enable hardware encoding and vc1? ps. i have another unrelated question, should i send it in this post or create another one for better organiztion when other people search the forum for answers? p.s.s Im sorry im asking a billion questions lol
